The Interventional Neurology and Brain Stroke departments of Dr. Jai Dev Memorial Rotary Ambala Hospital (DJMRH) are pleased to announce the successful treatment of a 23-year-old girl who presented with an acute basilar artery occlusion, a condition with a mortality rate of approximately 90%. The patient arrived at DJMRH’s emergency department 12 hours after symptom onset, showing signs of a left cerebellum infarct and evolving brainstem infarcts. Given the severity of her condition, the patient was swiftly transferred to the neurology Cath Lab, where Dr. Ajay Panwar, an interventional neurologist and brain stroke specialist, and his team performed a thrombectomy for basilar artery occlusion. Additionally, they administered intraarterial Tenecteplase to address distal thrombi in the PCAs and small perforators. Following the intervention, Dr. Panwar promptly referred the patient to the neurosurgeon for a suboccipital decompression, which was performed immediately.
The next day, the neurosurgeon reported that the patient had regained normal consciousness with only partial left-side weakness. The timely recanalization of the basilar artery followed by immediate decompression was crucial to this life-saving intervention. We, the team at DJMRH, wish the patient a healthy life ahead!
